Join Alphonso Brown, owner and operator of Gullah Tours, Inc., on a journey through the places, history and lore enriched by the varied contributions of black Charlestonians. From Catfish Row to the sweetgrass basket makers, Brown’s distinctive narration and vibrant descriptions in native Gullah make this a unique and enjoyable way to experience the Holy City.  Cover illustrations are paintings by Mary Whyte, and courtesy of Coleman Fine Art.

Toning of Water Gilded Surfaces: Frames, Furniture and More

PROGRAM DETAILS
The heavily distressed frames of the late 16th and early 17th centuries can be created anew with a contemporary touch. This class covers toning techniques from the era, including casein, wax, Japan paints, watercolor, and shellac processes. Working on pre-gilded samples, students experiment with distressing, using materials ranging from horsehair cloth to ground pumice. Discussion of
application to furniture and other surfaces is included.

Students should have basic skills in water gilding. Gilded samples and all toning materials are included in the materials fee. Students may wish to bring their own gilded frames (no larger than 16 inches by 20 inches) to work on.

The instructor is Smith B. Coleman.

The Mary Whyte Art Educator's Award

Coleman Fine Art is pleased to announce the recipient of the Mary Whyte Art Educator's Award, Dona Dowling. As a visual arts teacher St. John's High School in Charleston, SC, Ms. Dowling exhibited excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to the visual arts. Mayor Joseph P. Riley presented the award at a special reception Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 at 4:30p.m.  To be given annually, the award is accompanied by a $1,000 cash prize, and is designed to highlight a visual art teacher in the Charleston area school district who has demonstrated superior commitment to their students and to their craft.
